As we all know, Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs died this past week. Jobs's accomplishments are massive and many, and it is impossible to imagine the modern world without his technological contributions; how many of you could live without your iPods or MacBooks?
To commemorate his life and achievements, I am posting the link to the commencement speech he gave to the graduating class of 2005 at Stanford University. You can find both the text and video of the speech here: http://tweentribune.com/content/how-live-you-die
After you read/watch his speech, consider and respond to one or more of the following prompts:
- In your opinion, what makes this speech good/bad? Provide evidence to support your opinion.
- After reading/watching this, what is your opinion of Steve Jobs? What about the speech made you think of him that way?
- What about Jobs's speech made it effective as an address to students graduating from college? Why or why not?
1. In my opinion this is a very good speech because he relates the speech to his very own life and he starts at the begging and tells about what it took him to reach the end.
ReplyDelete2. Even though steve jobs never graduated from college he is a very smart man who has learned from his failures which made him even more of a success. this speech made me think of him like that because he started a company in a garage a it grew to be worth more than billions of dollars. and then disaster hits when he gets fired but he moves on. he starts two of his own companies which turned out to be hits. He started dream works picture and every body knows what that is. and latter merged his other company neXt with apple.
3. This speech was very affective to the audience because he uses his failures as a guide. even though for most people the disasters in which he met most people would break under the pressure but he did not. he actually gained money from his mistakes. Steve jobs learned from hi mistakes and that is what every body should do
1. I believe that Steve Job's commencement speech was excellent because he gave the undergraduates priceless advice about the ups and downs in life using examples from his own experiences. People are more impacted when they hear about difficulties from people they know rather than randomly selected persons. Job taught the undergraduates an immense lesson about life, to follow your heart and trust your intuition, by telling three of his biggest life stories, including connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. The initial reason why i think this speech is great is because of Job's generosity to have given away his life's secrets to others, so that they may live a great life. I hope everyone follows his advice because it can really help people to succeed in life.
ReplyDelete2. I think Steve Jobs is a very intelligent and successful man, even though he dropped out of college, because he became renowned and led us to an era of innovation and technology. His commencement speech made me think of him that way because he started off dropping out of college. The next thing you know, he got back up on his feet and created the first Mac while using skills he earned from his calligraphy class after he quit college. Then he got fired from Apple and started Pixar and NeXt, which Apple bought, and Job just got more and more successful. He is truly a role model for many people who think they cannot do anything and give up because no matter how many adversities he faced in his life, he kept going; he never settled. He followed his own advice.
ReplyDeleteThis speech made it effective as an address to students graduating from college because he used experiences and hardships from his life as an advise to the undergraduates. Steve Jobs used his failures and triumphs to guide the students and give them an essential life lesson, do not mind what anyone else thinks and just do what your heart says, follow your instinct. He urged the graduates to seek knowledge and not to settle on a career until they find something they love to do, otherwise life would be dreary and meaningless. Jobs learned from his mistakes, and we should do the same.
ReplyDelete1.) I agree with CJ and believe that Steve Jobs' speech was amazing. He made it very personable by talking about his own life and events that occurred that taught him life lessons. These stories could have connected to the lives of the graduates in his audience. He also talked about the struggles that he, as a college student, went through during his few months at Reed College. Stories like these could have easily related to the students' lives. Also, Steve Jobs taught his audience many lessons about life, love and death that these students could use later on in their lives.
ReplyDelete2.)From watching his speech, I feel that Steve Jobs was a caring person. While he was attending college, he felt as though he was using up all of his parents' hard-earned money on this education. So, he dropped out as a way to keep his family from losing more money. I agree with Savara because I too think that Steve was a very driven man. Even though he was fired from Apple, he kept doing what he loved and created two new companies along the way. One of his new companies was purchased by Apple and got him his job back. In his speech, Jobs said "don't settle." This means don't stop until you get what you know you deserve. You can't let anyone tell you that there's a limit to how great you can be. Also, I believe that Steve Jobs was a hopeful person because in his speech, he said: "So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future." By this, Jobs is saying that through his whole life, he was always hoping that everything in his past will connect and lead him to something great.
3.) This speech was very effective to the students graduating from college because, like Savara said, it taught them many life lessons. Through the telling of his own life and struggles, Steve Jobs was teaching the graduates valuable life lessons that they can use later on in their own lives. Some of the lessons Jobs talked about were "never give up" and "do what you love to do." Steve was telling his audience that they'll mess up in life, they'll all make mistakes along the way. But the important thing is that they get back up and keep fighting to get where they want to go in life.
1) I agree with cj because he does start at the beginning of his life to his death.
ReplyDelete2) My opinion of Steve Jobs is he a very determined person who never gives u no matter what happens to him in his life. The part in the reading that made me think of him that way is when he first got cancer and he didnt know what had happened but he got surgery and the cancer was gone.
3) This speech is ver affective to college students becauce he tells them to never give up no mattter what life throws at you. like cj said Steve Jobs does learn from his mistakes and so should every one else
1. i agree with Lizzie. i think that his speech was very encouraging and was probably very easy to connect with. he was very detailed and descriptive. speeches are often hard to sit through but he was very easy to listen to and kept me engaged.
ReplyDelete2. i find it very ironic that the CEO of apple inc was once sleeping on the floor of friend's dorm room floors and buying his meals with the 5 cents he got from recycling his bottles. i agree with Lizzie and Savera; i think he was very driven. even though he was fired from the company he started, he didn't just give up and feel sorry for himself. he kept going and became the very successful man he was.
3. this speech is very affective to college students because it is very honest. he tells you that you are going to be at the bottom at some point. it is your choice then to give up or to continue on with what you love. these college students know that Steve Jobs is so successful and hearing how he did it will encourage them to do the same
1. I think that Steve Jobs’s speech was excellent for several reasons. First, he used examples/stories from his own life to help represent the advice he was trying to give the graduates. He gave advice about how you can only connect the dots looking back in your life and how every decision you make, as long as it feels right, makes up those connected dots. Steve Jobs not only used solid proof behind his advice but he also used interesting and intricate examples. For example, I’m sure that most people were shocked when he shared that he had never graduated college. It’s generally not something you expect from a person that started a multi-billion dollar company. Lastly, he did a very good job at presenting his speech. He kept it slow so people could follow him but not so slow that people got bored and I only noticed one time where he stumbled a little bit. He made frequent eye contact with the audience and held their interest the whole time.
ReplyDelete2. To be quite honest, I was not expecting Steve Jobs to be anything like he was while giving his speech. I envisioned the class geek who was very smart and always technical. I though for sure that he was going to talk all about his accomplishments and achievements in the technology world and boast about how he had made life better for everyone. But in fact, seeing his speech made me change my perspective completely. He talked all about his failures and his difficulties. He expressed creative words of wisdom that he had learned along his life journey. Everything he said in the speech had meaning whether it was to prove a point or to simply explain his life story. From a person as successful as Steve Jobs I found it incredible to hear what he had to say about life choices and how even as something as dramatic as never graduating college could influence his life so much.
3. I think his speech proved very effective to the graduating class. In his speech he talked about the life choices he had made and how they had led him to where he was. College is a final step for a lot of people before jumping into an ocean of extreme decisions. By communicating the reasons for his choices and how they affected his life, the graduates can learn some pretty useful experience advice from someone who’s already been there and since became successful. Steve Jobs also explained a large portion of his life story when he was the students’ age. He recalled to the students his time in college as a drop-in where his first spark of interest arose in calligraphy. He told them how the conditions of his everyday life weren’t that great but how he had worked towards something that was meaningful to him and that he accomplished great things after that because of it. In telling the students about his experiences, he hints at advice for the students to take from him.
1. I agree with what CJ said in his response and how he related his speech to his own life to make the students better understand it.
ReplyDelete2. After reading Steve Job's speech, i think of him as a visionary and someone who changed the world with his work because 9 out of 10 people own at least 1 Apple product.
1) I agree with everything said. He readily admitted his own mistakes to give the students a better lesson learned. I also found it a little amusing he talked about himself dropping out of college at a college graduation.
ReplyDelete2)My opinion of Steve Jobs is that he is down to earth. You'd think one of the most successful business men in the world may be a little arrogant (kind of like what Edj said), but he was once fired from his own company because he screwed up. He didn't try and put a good spin on things to make him look better.
3)The thing that made this speech so effective was that he was blunt. There was no bigger meaning to the whole speech. He gave his advice directly and without reserve. He wasn't trying to make it a speech to be remembered, he was trying to sincerely help the students.
1) I agree with both Sami and Lizzie as Steve Jobs speech was very encouraging and inspirational. First, by including the triumphs and fails of his career he really does teach a lesson through his stories. Not only did he give useful advice such as life is not always easy but it works out in the end, and to only settle for the best, hopefully this advice will stay with the graduates through life. By watching the speech I continually was interested by his stories as I wanted to see the outcome of his difficult scenarios. I was shocked how such a famous business man had not completed college and yet turned out a billionaire. Next, like Edj said, he spoke at a pace that was easy for others to understand but was not to boring that would make people fall asleep. Overall I believe Jobs’ speech was intriguing by including stories, advice, and presenting it very well.
ReplyDelete2) After watching the speech I believe Steve Jobs is an inspiration. He shows to never settle for anything less but the best. As seen in the speech he says, “You’ve got to find what you love” which really reiterates go after your dreams. “Don’t settle” on something that you will not give 100% to. I also believe that after watching the speech that Steve is very passionate. After getting fired from Apple, Jobs started his own company, NeXT as well as Pixar. This shows Jobs did not care what road bumps came up as long as he could continue to do what he loved.
3) I believe Steve Jobs’ speech was effective to graduates of college in a couple of ways. By talking about his own struggles throughout his life, he really lets the graduates know that not everything will go perfect in life. The important thing is to continue to try until you succeed, which will eventually happen. I also found that by including motivational advice such as “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” will allow the graduates to strive to become better. They will not only reach for their dreams, but also know that it is okay to continue to learn and become better at something. Last, I believe the speech was effective by leaving the graduates with something to think about after the speech has ended. By saying to do what you love allows the graduates to look over their own lives and evaluate if they are truly happy.
I agree with most of the ideas that have been shared. He definitely gave all the graduates great advice to have them realize that they can really find what they love to do in life.
ReplyDelete1) This speech is fairly good as it gives fabulous advice for others to learn from and shows how much Steve Jobs has made with his life, after many struggles. On the other hand, if you are looking at how he gave his speech, I think it could be improved. He was really looking down at his notes and didn't look at the crowd as much as he could have. Also, he was partially monotone; it was more noticeable in certain stories.
2) I think Steve Jobs made the most of his life since it didn't start out so well. I believe he really worked hard and achieved a lot. More than anything, he seems like a well-rounded person. I can tell this from his speech because he spoke with meaning that convinced you that he learned from his mistakes and that he wanted the listener to as well. He deeply believed that you would find what you enjoyed and loved and would know it.
1) I agree with Lizzie, Baylee and CJ because Steve Job's speech was excellent. I think this because he turned both his negative and possitive events of his life to make an inspirational speech. In his speech he said the following "I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." Also, what makes the speech great is that he used experiences that could relate to the students and used frequent eye contact. All of these thing i have just mentioned are all the ways Steve Job's speech was superb.
ReplyDelete2) After reading his speech I got the impression that he is very wise and grateful. he has taken all his bad experiences and turn them into lessons for him to learn from and others to learn from. I also think he is grateful because with all the things he has gone through he didn't regret any choices. Such as dropping out of college or getting fired from Apple. Because for him they all led him to a happy future with a family and a job he loves.
1) I think Steve Job's speech was very inspiring. His personal stories of struggle and then triumph were easy to connect to and very encouraging. There were a lot of negative things going on in his life but instead of backing down, he accepted his failures and continued to work at what he truly loved. I think that the message behind his speech was very inspirational. Do what you truly love in life because life is too short to not follow your dreams.
ReplyDelete2)After watching this speech, I was a little surprised. It was shocking to learn that the creator of Apple and Pixar was once sleeping on the floors of dorms and never even made it out of college. But I really think that Steve Jobs is a very inspiring, caring, and intelligent man. He took all of the experiences in his life and used them to help him thrive in what he loves. And the fact that he shares this information in the speech shows that he is not afraid to admit his mistakes and help other learn from him.
3) I think that his speech was probably very effective towards the graduates. I think that by him talking about how he always worked towards his dreams, the graduates will try and make the most of their life and enjoy every moment of it. And when life knocks you down, you have to get right back up and keep on going with no regrets. By sharing his struggles in life and in his business it teaches them that life is not always going to work out the way we want it to but they just have to keep going no matter what. I feel like he just got the idea across that life should be looked at in a positive way even through all of the ups and downs. Almost like the glass is half full opposed to almost empty.
1.) As the many other people who posted before me, I believe this as an excellent speech. I agree with CJ that Steve Jobs did well because he went through his life starting before he was born then leading into his success. Instead of him telling a story about his company, he told as story about his life. As Lizzie said, the stories that he chose to tell are ones which many of the students could relate to. Stories about achievements, hardships and failures; they are stories which anyone could relate to. I also believe this speech is a great one because Steve Jobs wasn’t bragging about his success and telling the students how well he did. He told them about how he didn’t succeed, and then how he recovered or how he viewed life, not as a right but as a gift.
ReplyDelete2.) After listening to the speech, my opinion of Steve Jobs is that he is respectful, independent and humble. Steve Jobs is a respectful person because he wasn’t gifted with a great life and lots of money. He didn’t have much but he believed that he could be successful and never gave up. Through all the hard times he faced he still kept the same determination. When he was fired from the company he forged, he didn’t see it as a curse but as a gift. I also believe that Steve Jobs is independent. Throughout his life he never went with the flow but did what he believed in. Although he might not have known it would be the right choice, he had faith that everything would be okay. In college, he knew that he was spending his parents hard earned money, as Lizzie said, and decided it was better for him to drop out. Finally, I feel that Steve Jobs is humble. Throughout the whole entire speech he did not talk about his wealth and success. When he talked about how he was fired from Apple, he did not say it with anger towards the people who had gotten rid of him. He knew that everything happened for a reason and although he had done amazing work, he should not brag about it. He was truly an amazing person and role model.
3.) The things that made Steve Job’s speech effective for college graduates because it gives advice and guidance. Like Savera said, the speech gives lots of advice to the graduates which they can use in the near future. He gives a final lesson on determination and dedication. Steve Jobs tells them to follow their dreams and never lose their drive. The speech is also effective because it is very interesting. Instead of a boring and no memorable speech, he had everyone listening. In the end, he had one thing to say to the students “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish”.
In my opinion, Steve Jobs’ commencement speech was a truly good speech. Like CJ and Lizzie, I think the speech was relatable and inspiring. Using stories of his own life, he made it possible for the graduates to put themselves in his shoes. Lizzie says that the stories he told about his life at Reed College let students make connections to him through their shared experience of college life. I agree with her on that point. I also think that Steve Jobs’ stories made the idea of reaching the level of success that he did palpable for the students. Knowing that he went through struggles like anyone of the students may have in their lives makes them see that they, too, have the potential to be great, on matter what happens in their lives. The speech was meaningful and personal. Each word meant something to Jobs, so the audience felt them, too.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching this speech, I have gained respect for Steve Jobs. Before learning about Jobs through this speech, I, like Savera, only knew that Steve Jobs was the CEO of Apple. I had no idea who he was as a person. Now, I think that Jobs is a driven, intelligent, caring person. Even after dropping out of college, Jobs overcame this struggle and led the way to the technological age we live in today. I agree with Lizzie that Jobs seems caring, because of the fact that he dropped out of college because he had thought that he was wasting his parents‘ money. He seems to be a normal guy at heart, because he didn’t grow up with money or inherit Apple. He worked through financial issues, a problem most of us can relate to today. When I think of Steve Jobs, I’ll remember more than just a CEO that brought me my iPod and my Mac, I’ll think of a man who really set an example for me and my generation.
I think Steve Jobs’ address was effective because, like Lizzie and Savera said, the speech taught the graduates life lessons that they can use later on. By telling stories of his life leading up to Apple, Jobs shows that he started off just like the students graduating from Stanford. He was a regular guy who wanted to go somewhere in life. Also, like Elizabeth C. says, Steve Jobs tells the students that now matter what happens in their lives or careers, they can’t give up. I think that makes this an effective address to graduating students because a commencement speech should inspire students to be great, and that is exactly what Steve Jobs’ speech does.
I, like most all of the other people who already commented, found this speech amazing. It was actually quite inspiring. I think that Steve Jobs probably didn't even take that much time to write the speech, it was so natural. Everything he said was meaningful and relevant.
ReplyDeleteI have always respected Steve Jobs for his revolutionary inventions, he was and always will be a genius. However, after watching this speech, I have a whole new perspective on the kind of person he is. I feel like i can relate to him because the way he admitted he didn't always have everything figured out made him seem like a real person and not just some rich CEO that is always perfect.
Obviously, this speech will be very effective for the graduating class of Stanford. A lot like what Hannah said, he told stories about his life before he was a successful businessman. His speech probably inspired a lot of the students who heard it. It gave hope to the students who don't know what they are going to do with life. Jobs made it clear that you don't have to know where you are going, all you have to do is trust that everything will work out and you will be successful.
1. I think that Steve Jobs did an amazing job presenting this speech and it was very inspiring. He sent a great message and that was to never give up on your dream because you can achieve it. Like Savera said, it makes a bigger impact coming from someone you know rather than a complete stranger. Seeing someone you know achieve their dream gives you the courage to achieve your own.
ReplyDelete2. After watching this speech, like Sarah, I was surprised. I was surprised that a billionaire was once sleeping on the floors of their friends apartments. Not all famous or successful people come from glamorous backgrounds and it gives you hope that you can do what you want just like Jobs did what he wanted. Steve Jobs was an amazing man because he never gave up nor did he care what happened to him, as long as he loved what he was doing every day. The statement he made about live every day as though it were your last was very powerful. You have to have fun in your life and make sure that you are living it to the best of your ability and I think Jobs did that very well.
3. Jobs speech was very effective to the students because he gave some very inspiring advice as well as related his speech to situations he has been in. He told the students to never give up no matter what happens and that is something that everyone should live by. You can't let the hard times get you down because you can bounce back from them but you can't bounce back from letting your dream die. By relating his speech to his own life would have also affected the students I think. After hearing about the struggles he went through and how he got past them shows the kids that they can get past any struggles they go through. Steve Jobs did a great job in writing a powerful speech that sent a great message.
1. in my opinion this speech was excellent! i thought this because like Savera said, steve jobs uses his own life experiences to teach the students to make better choices in their lives. His speech was very inspirational, and encouraged the students to live their life to the fullest.
ReplyDelete2. My opinion of Steve Job is that he is a very well educated man. Even though he didn't graduate from college he still know his stuff. I was also very shocked that he got to be so rich. When he was talking about how he was sleeping on the floors of his friends houses I was thinking that there was no way that this was true. When he said, " don't stop until you get what you know you deserve', i was very inspired to go out and do that things that i always dreamed of doing. This makes me think of steve jobs as a very inspiring man, and i wish to live my life in his footsteps.
3. I agree with lizzy when she said that she agreed with Savera when she said that it taught them many life lessons. I also think that it made the students want to correct their lives if they were messed up. When Steve Jobs talked about the bad moments of his life i beleive that it made the students learn from his mistakes, and hopfully made them realize things that they had done wrong in the past, and made them want to make things better.
1) I think that Steve Jobs' speech was really good. He kept the crowd interested in what he was saying. His message had a lot of meaning behind it and it taught a really good life lesson in a way. He encouraged everyone listening to his speech to not give up, and that sometimes there will be low times in your life. You just have to use that low point and turn it into strength in order to move back up.
ReplyDelete2) After watching Steve Jobs' speech, I think of him as someone who does not give up easily. If something does not go his way, he doesn't let that stop him. It takes a lot of strength and commitment to go from sleeping on the floor of your friend's dorm room to becoming CEO of a multi billion dollar company along with creating two other companies from your failures. What makes me think of him this way is when he said that always continue loving what you do no matter what happens.
3) What made Steve Jobs speech effective to students graduating collage is because he said that at some point in your life, there will be a hard time, but if you just keep doing what you love and not give up, you will get through it. This is very effective because he is telling students not just the good things that will happen in their future but also the bad things, and he is telling them how to get through it.
1) In my opinion, this speech was outstanding. There were many things that a good professional speaker does that Steve did as well. He used quotes to relate to the graduating Stanford students. Also, he intricately explained situations in his life that were relevant to what he was saying. While on the podium, he was very professional. He was clean, understanding, and inspiring to all his listeners. He showed all the students to live their lives to its highest potential.
ReplyDelete2) After watching Steve Job's speech, I have a opinion on him that is almost opposite to how I viewed him before. Before listening to this speech, I though Steve was just a smart guy that graduated top of his class with no troubles throughout life. I have now learned that he never graduated college, and was really adopted. He suffered through cancer, and was magically cured. I have a whole new respect for Steve Jobs and I believe he has natural talent and is a inspiring man that has strongly fought his way through life's troubles.
3)There are many things that Jobs did during his speech to make this addressable to the graduating class of 2005. He knows that this class was intelligent and knew that they were going to go far in life. Steve connected to times in his life that he knew the students would understand. He explained to them how to make it through the struggles in life and how to always live everyday like it's the last. Although the students are graduating from a top college, Steve Jobs taught them many new life lessons that day.
1.) I agree with Lizzie and believe that this speech was amazing. Steve Jobs made his speech relatable to the students graduating. He talked about his own personal experiences that have helped him throughout the years, and these experiences may help the graduates in life's ups and downs.
ReplyDelete2.) After watching this speech, I have learned a great deal about Steve Jobs. Before watching this, I was unaware of the struggles he has experienced and overcome. Like Hannah, I did not know much about him before watching this, and I have now gained a newfound respect for him. I have learned that Steve Jobs is a determined and persistent person, which explains why he is so successful. I think of him now as a great role model and leader to young adults.
3.) Steve Jobs's speech was effective to the college graduates because he was telling them life lessons such as "never give up." He included his own struggles in his speech, which told students to never stop trying. Including these important lessons in his speech allowed the students to learn from his mistakes and his accomplishments.
1) I agree with Lizzie, Baylee, and Edj. I think that this Commencement Address given by Steve Jobs was presented extremely well. I think this because he included personal experiences in his speech which made it a lot more interesting for his audience so that they would not be bored. For example, he gave the graduates specific advice that life is not always easy at times, but it works out in the end. Steve connected this to how he was fired from his own company, which was Apple, and then started his own company, NeXT. Apple bought NeXT, which is how Steve got back into the business and succeeded in making the first Mac computer to ever be made. By this he wanted to show the graduate students that life might not always run the way you would like it to, it will end up working out in the end, which it did for himself.
ReplyDelete2) After reading/watching this article, I think that Steve Jobs is a very passionate person. I agree with Sami, because he was a very driven person. When things did not go the way he planned for them to, he never gave up. He kept trying and trying until he succeeded. Because he had zeal for this field of work, and knew that he belonged here, he knew that he could not settle and just give up. He had to keep going. If he did not keep persevering, he would never be the intelligent and successful business person he was with his major technological contributions to Apple. In his speech he told the graduate students some personal stories, and his attitude about never giving up made me thibk this way of him.
3) I think that Steve Job's speech was very effective towards the students graduating from Stanford University. He gave the students motivational advice. He told them to never settle for what was not the best, or what they were not really interested in. He told them that they will find what they love as long as they keep trying. This is very useful advice for students graduating from college seeking their new careers. Another thing that Steve added in his speech that was effective to the graduate students was that he told them to never let anything get in the way of their success. He told them that in life there will be struggles, but to keep trying and not let that get in the way of living their life long dreams. Steve also expressed to the students that they can get through any struggles/hardships they face in life.

ReplyDelete1) I think the fact that Steve Jobs includes both lessons or morals and stories makes the speech good. The stories draw his listeners in. They are also stories that crowd of college students can relate to, due to the fact that the speech talked about decisions and events that happened to Steve Jobs around the time he was their age. The stories lead well into the morals and lessons he was trying to convey. Without the stories, the moral and lessons, which are the heart of the speech, wouldn’t have made as much of an impact.
ReplyDelete2) I believe Steve Jobs was a very smart man. He made good decisions without even knowing what they would bring. He lived his life how he wanted to live his life, which I find very admirable. He had a lot of knowledge and experience to share with the world, and I find it sad that he had to pass on when he probably still had so much to share.
3) Steve Jobs included things that his listeners could relate to. He spoke about aspirations in life and education, which were things college graduates could relate to. Throughout his entire speech, he was giving insight that targeted the listeners. Hearing things they could relate to made the students more apt to listen and enjoy the speech.
This speech is very good because it shows that even if you have a great tragedy or don't live up to who you wanted to be, there is sometimes something good that comes out of this. This is seen when Steve Jobs got fired from Apple, but out of that he created new technology and companies that would later help his original company, Apple. The speech also has a bad perspective as well. The speech makes you think that there will always be something good that comes out of something bad. However, this is not true, because sometimes there isn't anything good that comes out of something. This shows that the speech is bad because it might be giving you false hope and information.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the speech, my opinion of Steve Jobs is that he is actually a good guy, but he has gone through a lot of turmoil in his life. The speech gave me this impression because he had good goals set, but it was the situations he was in that made him sour at times. For example, he had good things planned for Apple, but when he was fired he was very upset about that.
What about Jobs's speech made it effective as an address to students graduating from college? Why or why not?
Steve Jobs's speech was effective towards the Stanford students because from the speech they know many things that they probably previously did not know. For example, they now know that there can be good that comes from bad situations, depending on how they react. They also now know some good tactics as to how to handle some situations.
1. I think that Steve Job's telling the graduates about his inspiration to do what he loves makes his speech good. It teaches the students to follow their dreams and to keep going even if you are knocked down. When he says how "The Earth's Catalog" really inspired him to do anything, he shows the graduates how they can look to anything for inspiration.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion, Steve Job's is a very inspiring and inteligent person. He tells the graduates how he was told he was crazy or he could not do anything. But he never listenedand just kept on trying.
3. Steve Jobs made his speech inspiring to college students because he relates to them and shows how they can be as successful as him. He also tells them to "Stay hungry, stay foolish" which means to always want something for yourself and not be afraid to make mistakes.
1. I believe that Steve Job’s speech was excellent. This is because he used his own personal experiences to teach future college graduates that they have to know what they want to do, and never give up. Most importantly, he lets young students know that there will be good and bad times in their life but always successes in the future. For example, the text states, “You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.” This quote proves that he is trying to brighten the horizons of young people and teach them, and help them learn from his own mistakes. If they do not do what they love, and love what they do, then only bad things will happen in their future.
ReplyDelete2. My opinion of Steve Job’s is that he is an intelligent person, and that just because he made mistakes when he was younger, does not mean that he is not smart. He learned from his mistakes and became a better person because of them. For example, when he talks about how he dropped out of college, it shows that he just knew what was best for him. After all, in the end, he became a famous inventor and he started a company that created the most popular technology devices of the decade.
3. Like Savera and Lizzie said, Steve Job’s speech was very effective to future college graduates because he uses his own valuable life lessons, and tells them about his own mistakes, so they are not repeated. Also, he tells them that it is okay to make mistakes because in the end, you will learn from them and become a smarter and better person because of them. Students going into college should listen and learn from Steve because he knows what he is talking about because he has experienced everything he has talked about, and he knows what they need to do to have a successful future. He gives good advice and opinions to future graduates such as “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.”
1. I thought this speech was very good. I liked that Steve Jobs used his own experiences and wasn't afraid to let the people know he failed and worked from his mistakes. I also liked that he made the speech very relatable to the students.
ReplyDelete2. My opinion of Steve Jobs is that he doesn’t give up. Like when he was fired by Apple, instead of giving up and not finding a new job he started two other companies. One of them is still successful today with creating animated movies and the other was bought by Apple. He knew that was the job he wanted to do and loved so he kept going with it and created the new companies. He never gave up even though he was fired.
3. Steve Jobs’s speech was good for the graduating students because it teaches them that mistakes are okay. He taught them how to handle a mistake or failure by keep going with what you love and to not give up.
1.I thought Steve Job’s speech was excellent and inspiring. It was excellent because it was he made it personable by telling the students about his successes and failures in life and to live life to the fullest; so the speech also had very good messages.
ReplyDelete2.After reading this speech, I think that Steve Jobs was a very strong man who turned his failures into successes. For example, when Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, he moved on and created the company NeXT. Instead of giving up and moving onto a different occupation, he continued doing what he loved and came up with a new company that was actually bought by Apple a few years later, so he got his old job back. But this story he told in his speech made me think that Steve Jobs was a strong man that never gave up.
3.Steve Jobs speech was very effective as an address to the graduating class because they learned important messages from this speech. One lesson they learned to do what you love, because if you just settle for anything in life, you’re going to be miserable; always do what you love. Another lesson that was given in this speech was that things will not always go the way you want in life, but you need to move on and turn that negative into a positive. These lessons will definitely get the graduates through hard situations in life and was very it effective for them to hear these lessons from Steve Jobs.
1. What made Steve Jobs speech good was that it was based off of all person experiences. Often, times when people hear others experiences with difficulties that they faced it gives them a sense of determination in thinking that if a person who did not go to college and who was fired from his own company can still become successful. Then why can't the rest of us? And also through his stories he was able to deliver some of life's most important messages including: connecting the dots, living life to its fullest, and living your dreams. And by delivering these messages
ReplyDeletein his stories he was able to get the point across in a short and consisted matter with keeping the listener interested.
2. After listening/ reading this it made me have a whole new level of respect for Steve Jobs. He has defined the odds and been able to go so far in line despite lack of education, and being fired from his own company. The thing about Steve Jobs that makes him such an extraordinary person is that he never gave up no matter how hard times were. He was determined to do what he loves and no one was going to tell him like wise. I think that if more people had the approach on life that Steve Jobs had, then we would all be much better off.
3. Steve Jobs speech was so effective on the student because it dealt with really life experience that many of them would most like face in there future if the had not already. Such when he say,"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life" meaning do not do something because that s what your family or friends want. Do it because it is what you want and love to do.
1. This speech was really good in my opinion because he said things that would actually make kids think about where they want to go in life. He gave good advice to people that thought they didn’t have a chance and gave the kids solid advice on the ups and downs in life.
ReplyDelete2. I think that Steve Jobs is a very knowledgeable man who cares about the future of our nation. He takes pride in helping younger children find the right path in life. When he said “if you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” That quote makes young people think about how their life will be down the road. And how you're never tied down to one thing if you don’t love it. So in my opinion, Steve Jobs is a very down to earth guy, who knows how to reach out and communicate to almost everyone.
3. Steve Jobs speech was affected because the way his speech was written it sounds as if he wants to reach out to every kid and tell that everything will turn out okay. That there are always ways to look at situations. He told them that there are always ups and downs to life and you need to see the better side of every situation.
1. I think that Steve Job's speech was very engaging and inspirational. I agree with Sami that it was very easy to listen too and it did not loose my attention at any time. I also think that he did a very good job with the stories that he told because they can make a college student think that they could accomplish anything as long as they tried. He had very good messages.
ReplyDelete2. Before I read this, I thought that Steve Jobs was a college graduate that went through many years of school to get where he was when he was in his prime in his inventing career. I had no idea that he was adopted, dropped out of school and started Apple in his garage. This is all very interesting to me and I now have even more respect for him.
3.I agree with Molly that this was a very effective speech to college graduates because he spoke of his life stories that were very inspiring. He spoke about not settling and finding what they love to do as their job because that is what he did, and it worked out for him! I also think it was very well done that he spoke about his failures in life to let them know that they will go through hard times, but they have to continue to work through them.
1.) I feel that Steve Jobs' speech was very inspirational and came right from his heart. As we all know, Steve Jobs has since passed away, but I feel that he lived true to his words till the very end. I agree with Courtney in saying that his speech was very relatable to the college students graduating because they could have and will go through both difficult and easy experiences throughout their life ahead of them. Steve Jobs used his own personal happenings and experiences to tell the students all about his success story and what he went through to eventually be the person he was on that exact day. Steve Jobs told the 2005 Stanford University graduating students all about the ups and downs in life, but most of all, stressed to the students to pursue the things in life that they love, which will therefore will help them become successful, no matter what they choose to do.
ReplyDelete2.) After watching this speech, I feel that Steve Jobs was a very successful, intelligent, and inspirational man. Every aspect of his speech portrayed these great qualities. One aspect was him explaining to the graduating students about him dropping out of school and eventually becoming very successful. I am sure he inspired all of the graduating students that day to live their live as full as he did.
3.) Steve Jobs' speech was very effective to the graduating students in that he talked about a career move and family, which would most likely be the next stage for this large group of people. When one graduates form college, they have doubts and reservations about where and what they are going to do and achieve next in their life. Steve Jobs stressed the fact that no matter what they chose to do, they must love what they do, in order to become successful, whether it pertain to work or family.
1.) I agree with Mary, that the speech was very inspirational and caught people's attention. In the speech he talks a lot about trial and fail. He tells three stories that teach a lesson about how to never give up. I also agree with what Mary said about how it taught college students that they could do anything if they just tried and never gave up.
ReplyDelete2.)After reading this blog i think of Steve Jobs as a very succesful man who worked hard for what he believed in. When he told the story about being fired, and just starting over that made me realize thatt nothing could stop him. He got knocked down but kept going and that is very inspirational.
3.) I agree with Anna, in sense that he talked about his steps in life in which the kids standing in front of him would be doing very soon. they will have to find a job and living, and eventually they will form a family. Steve showed them aspects of each in his life. Along with the hard times to get the students prepared for what they were about to enter.
1. I think that Steve jobs’ speech was well written and has a lot of good points that were presented in it. I liked that he talked a lot about his life experiences. I liked that he mentioned when he was fired from apple and how he said he got fired from apple and went one to be part of a multimillion dollar company called Pixar and he said “I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It awful tasted medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.” He gave a very good real life experience and the lesson was everything happens for a reason. He made the point of the lesson by giving a life experience. Also the speech wasn’t boring. Since he added life experiences it made me want to learn more and how everything worked out for him in the end.
ReplyDelete2. After reading stave jobs’ speech I think that he is kind and optimistic man. When he mentioned that ever since he was 17 he has looked in the mirror and asked himself “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” This shows that he is optimistic because every day he does something worth living for. When he acts as if it was his last day on Earth he is showing that he never does something that’s not living for. I also agree with Lizzie because he is a very caring person as well. He dropped out of college to save money for his working class parents was very caring, especially since jobs are scarce for the uneducated or people with college degrees.
3. I agree with Taylor. Every graduating college student needs to know that they have worked so hard to get to where they are and when they leave and not everything works out for them that there is always a way to make any situation better. Like Steve, when he got fired from apple it was a sad day for him. He got fired from a company he created. He turned that situation into a family, because he started working for Pixar and he got married and as I said before that wouldn’t have happened if he never got fired. So that is a very good speech to give to graduating students to reassure them that everything will work out in the end.
1) I feel that this speech was very good because Steve used all of his knowledge and life to give these students courage, motivation, and advice to help them with their futures. He gave a new perspective on life by saying things like dropping out of college and getting fired were the best things that ever happened to him. If certainly opened my eyes to the fact that life can come at you unexpected ways, as can success.
ReplyDelete2) From reading his speech, my opinion of Steve Jobs is that he was a man who does not care what others wanted him to be, but he was what he wanted to be. He talked about how his birth mother had wanted him to be adopted by college graduates and then go to college and how he was fired from apple. Although people continuously tried to get him to go on a different path from the one he did, he kept doing what pleased him. Jobs was a very persistent man, and he could not be stopped. His birth mother wanted him to go to college, so he dropped out of college. He was fired from his own company, so he started a new company. He did what he loved and he lived his life to the fullest because that is what made him happy, and he was the kind of man who realized that happiness is all that matters.
3) This speech was effective to college graduates because, like Mary said, he gave advice and said that it worked for him. He, as we all know, was a very successful man, and the graduates listening to his speech most likely realized that they should listen to a man who was so successful and do what he did. He probably made him figure that doing what you love is actually the way to go for both success and happiness. If Steve had gone in any other direction with this speech, then it would not have gotten the same message across, so this particular speech was very appropriate for college graduates.
1) I really enjoyed the speech Steve Jobs gave. He used his life to engage the readers/listeners in a very inspirational way. Anyone could relate to what Steve Jobs was saying, he shows that even if you make some mistakes, you can still be successful in life and it is not the end of the world.
ReplyDelete2) I think that Steve Jobs is definitely a role model for people everywhere. Like Erica said, he was persistent and did what he wanted. He also never gave up on his life and what he wanted to do. He shows that at the end of the day it doesn't matter what other people want from you, all that matters is what you want, and what makes you happy.
3) This speech was very effective for college graduates because, like Erica said, he is a very successful man so people will listen, and take his advice. Also, when you graduate from college a chapter of your life is over. You are basically on your own, and need to know that from this point on you need to make decisions that make you happy, whether that is what the people around you want or not. As Danielle said, he was a very optimistic man and lived for what he wanted everyday which is a "skill" everyone should have.
1.) There were many good and bad things about this speech. He related to the students and added in humor, and he tried to keep them actively listening and engaged. Like Erica said, he showed that no matter where life takes you, what road you go down, or what mistakes you make, you can get past them and have a successful life.
ReplyDelete2.) After reading this speech. I can see how wise Steve jobs is. He takes all of his experiences and learns a lesson from them, and applies them to his everyday life.
3.) his speech was perfect for students in college because he reminisced on his past, how he got to be where he is today, and how he kept moving towards the future, which is ahead of all of them.
1) I agree with everyone by saying that the speech was very good speech. The speech made it easier to listen to because, he really tried to keep his listeners interested. This was shown when he talked about how getting fired and dropping out was two of the greatest thing that had happened to him.
ReplyDelete2) After reading and watching this speech it showed me how smart and nice he really was. Also it really shows how wise he is because he learns about every experience he has and learns from all his mistakes.
3) This was a great speech for the kids that are in college telling them that they are going to work for everything they have. Telling them where he was back then and what he believed, telling them to kept trying.
1) I agree with mostly everyone's idea of Steve Job's speech. I believe his speech was very He made himself very relate-able by telling about his own life, and his own experiences. I also liked how he didn't try to hide anything about himself, he talked about dropping out of college, getting fired, and even his close to death experience. To me, this shows that Steve Job's was very open and wanted people to connect with him. His speech also kept me interested, making it less obvious that his speech was 15 minutes long.
ReplyDelete2) After watching this video, I have a lot of respect for Steve Jobs. I love the message that he was trying to convey. I believe his message was to just follow your heart, take chances, and everything will end up the way it should. His speech definitely showed me how down to earth and wise Steve Jobs is. I never really thought of Steve Jobs as anything other than just the guy who created Apple. I think this video/speech has made me see him in a more personable, pleasant way.
3)I think this speech was a good to give to students just graduating college. Steve talked a lot about following you're heart and doing what you love. It's important for college students to keep this in mind so they can really pursue the life they want after college. I also think this speech can relate to everyone who wants to have a successful, satisfying life.
1.) Personally, I thought his speech was very moving. He talked a lot about following your dreams in the face of countless voices. He also talked about hope in the face of death, and certainty in the face of uncertainty. He used his own experiences (in three stories) to express his ideas. For instance, he talked about how he dropped out of college, and how that was one of the best decisions he ever made. To most people, this may seem like a very unpopular choice, but because his focus was to follow his dreams, he didn't steer off course.
ReplyDelete2.) After watching his speech, I think Steve Jobs had it all figured out. He knew where he was going with his life early in life, and that set him straight for the rest of his career. One important aspect of the speech that he said was that he never got tired of what he did. In fact, he grew more and more fond of it with each passing year. That is when you find something you truly love to do. Plus, he just made very logical sense out of everything. His message was just to follow your dreams, no matter what. That is definitely easier said than done, however.
3.) This speech was very effective to give to graduating college students. It talks about the goals Jobs set for the future, and how he became successful. This will definitely help the students later in life, because everyone listens to Steve Jobs, and it all just makes sense.
1.) What makes the speech good is that he relates it to his life and his success and relates it to the very end of his life.
ReplyDelete2.)After i finished watching his speech i realized what an intelligent and nice guy he really was. It clearly shows how wise he really is because he learns from every experience. He doesn't just learn from his mistakes he learns from others too.
3.)Steves jobs speech was very effective to those graduating college. He teaches them valuable life lessons that he experienced and tells them that they should never give up. He shares his failures in life to help others overcome his mistakes.
1.) What made his speech good was that he was really inspiring and his words said a lot about him. When I was reading the article it was interesting because I felt the same way that someone should do what they do because they love it and that they should do what they want. I don't think I saw anything in his speech that wasn't good.2.) My opinion of Steve Jobs now is that he was a very smart man who knew what he wanted and who is an inspiring person who wants others to live their live the way they want to. What about his speech that made me feel this way was just the way he wrote how we shoukd follow our heart and do what we want because we love it.3.)I think Steve Job's speech did make it effictive for students graduating college and high school because it showed them that they should be doing what they want and just that people should study what they are interested in and just go for it and live your life because it won't last forever.
